I'll be honest, I don't read a lot of books if I think they're going to be a tear-jerker. I come to romance for the HEAs after all! I’m all about the uplifting quality of romance stories, which is also why I avoid sad movies like the plague (never seen The Notebook and I don't want to!)
But every so often I read a book that sneaks up on me and really gets the tears flowing. These picks are absolutely worth having a cry, just be sure to have a box of tissues handy!
- The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas by John Boyne – warning: do not read this in a public place! Stupid me for reading it on a train full of office commuters…
- The House in Via Manno by Milena Agus – The twist at the end of this book was heartbreaking. It’s a short read, but it packs a powerful emotional punch.
- The Road by Cormac McCarthy – You know it can’t possibly have a Hollywood ending…but it’s no less painful when it happens. Easily one of my favourite books of all time.
- Little Women by Louisa May Alcott – I remember reading this and bawling my eyes out as a little girl, need to revisit it some day.
